As usual, our first look from a major action photo has come courtesy of Entertainment Weekly and as usual, the Internet has opinions about it. In this case, it is Walt Disney's live-action remake of Aladdin. The EW cover (along with a handful of photos) is giving us what the teaser trailer did not, namely a good look at its core trio of heroes, with Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Jasmine and Will Smith as the Geenie. And, the reality is told, these pics look precisely how we should have predicted them to look. Disney is giving us a live-action Aladin, one explicitly primarily based on the 1992 animated mega-hit ($504 million back in 1992), and this is precisely what these pictures seem to be like.

Does the cover shot appear a little like cosplay? Sure, but that's technically what these films have become. First of all, you can make the equal argument for any comic ebook superhero movie, with (for example) Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange wearing a comics-accurate costume that makes him seem both like the Sorcerer Supreme or a man pretending to be the Sorcerer Supreme at a birthday party or at a Comic-Con. Second, because part of the attraction of these live-action redos is rooted in the inherent attraction of seeing animated characters rendered quite source-accurate in live-action, making Aladdin and Jasmine look more-or-less like Aladdin and Jasmine is a key section of the process. Again, this applies to comic book films as well.

When you go to see an Aquaman film or a Venom movie, you favor seeing these characters searching more-or-less like their supply material. Marwan Kenzari's Jafar (who continues the Disney trend of "thirst-worthy" villains) appears like a lot as viable like the tall, lean and menacing villain voiced by way of Jonathan Freeman in the 1992 hit. And, yes, you can make the case that these actors appear like performers in a live stage show, however again, that's partly what these videos are. The likes of Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin exist as an animated feature, a stage show and now a live-action movie. There are going to be some similarities for all three.

And, yes, that applies to Will Smith's Genie as well. The photos we see here are in truth Will Smith as the Geenie. But as Smith himself notes on his Instagram, he will spend at least some of the film as a massive blue genie. Considering the odd sample of casting actors of color as oddly-colored alien creatures (or outright mo-cap creations), it is likely now not an awful thing that Will Smith will get to seem to be like Will Smith for at least phase of the movie. Moreover, you don't cast a world superstar (and, yes, Smith is nevertheless a large overseas draw when inside the comforts of a franchise) and then flip him into an unrecognizable creation for the entirety of the movie.

There is a big difference between how these pop culture creations seem to be in a still photo versus in the movie. Sometimes the bad first impressions are accurate (Terminator: Genisys) and once in a while, they are now not (X-Men).  For better or worse, these pix from Walt Disney's live-action version of Aladdin look like, well, a live-action version of Walt Disney's 1992 animated version of Aladdin. Re-adapted by John August and directed by way of Guy Ritchie, Aladdin opens on May 24, 2019. Do folks honestly prefer to see a live-action musical model of Aladdin at least to the extent that they flocked to Kenneth Branagh's surprisingly top remake of Cinderella? Can Disney nice the curse of the Disney Memorial Day opener (Tomorrowland, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Solo)?
