Against Exhibit B Paris

PRESS STATEMENT & PRESS CONFERENCE DETAILS
The anti-racist collective ‘CONTRE-Exhibit B Paris’ issued a press release today to announce their intentions to continue protesting against the staging of South African theatre director Brett Bailey’s controversial live performance installation, ‘Exhibit B’ (The Human Zoo), in the French capital.
The collective of writers, artists, teachers, university lecturers and political activists have been working tirelessly to raise awareness and disseminate information about the problematic content of the installation, which features 12 controversial and de-humanising live performance tableaux featuring actors of African descent shackled, silenced and enchained, some in cages.
The protest campaign and online petition against the showing of ‘Exhibit B’ in France – which has attracted more than 20,000 supporters and petition signatories – mirrors the anti-racist campaign led by Sara Myers in the UK that led to the Barbican cancelling the staging of the installation at the Vaults in London earlier this year.

As a direct response to the recent demonstrations held outside Théâtre Gérard Philippe in Saint-Denis last week – and in anticipation of the forthcoming staging of ‘Exhibit B’ at the cultural centre Le CENTQUATRE 104 on rue Curial in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, from 7th to 14th December – the Collectif CONTRE-Exhibit B have organised a press conference that will take place on Monday 8th December 2014 at 10.30am (Paris time; GMT+1) at iReMMO Research Institute (IReMMO: Institut de Recherche et d'Etudes Méditerranée et Moyen Orient), 7, rue Basse des Carmes 75005 Paris, France (a location map for the venue is available at:http://www.iremmo.org/).

International journalists, anti-racist activists, educators, culture sector practitioners and arts correspondents who have been following this news story are invited to attend the press conference and hear the arguments presented by the campaign participants.
