Brett Bailey and #exhibit B behind riot police lines near Paris
What kind of antiracist artist would want his work to continue behnd lines of riot police, some of whom could be seen clubbing young black demonstrators in front of the theatre in Saint Denis last night. Surely any antiracist, even if he thought he was right, would see a problem there! Bailey has never participated in a contradictory debate, not in Berlin, not in London, not in Paris. "I'm an antracist and I don't want to talk to the people who disagree with me, who are mostly Black". It's Orwellian!
I am a man. If in order to "denounce rape" I put on tableaux vivants with semi naked women playing immobile and silent victims under decorative lighting and melancholic music, most people would understand that I was aestheticizing suffering in an unacceptable way. Why is it different when it's Black bodies? The question needs to be asked, and the answer is to be found in the vast filthy pool of unacknowledged and often unconscious racism in our societies.
