Tony Cliff: Mao and Stalinism (1957)
There are not many maoists around in Western Europe these days, but in some parts of the world there are. And even in Britain or France there are millions of people who imagine that when we say we want workers to overthrow capitalism, we must be somehow sympathetic to the passionate and uniformed masses of Chinese people which we imagine maoists in China were. So it is still important to underline that Mao was zero per cent concerned with democratic control of the economy by the producers. That is, in the most important sense, he was zero per cent socialist. This 1957 article does a good job.
